Ghazala Hashmi, a Democratic state senator, made history by becoming the first Indian American and Muslim to win statewide office in Virginia, securing the lieutenant governor’s position. Arriving from India as a child, she previously worked as a college professor and entered politics in 2019. Her victory, along with other Democratic wins on election night, signified a rebuke of Trump and the Republican Party.
