German prosecutors have charged a former Syrian security official, identified as Fahad A, with crimes against humanity for torturing prisoners at a Damascus jail during Bashar al-Assad’s regime. The indictment alleges he participated in over 100 interrogations from 2011 to 2012, involving severe abuse leading to the deaths of at least 70 prisoners. Arrested on May 27 and indicted on December 10, he is currently in pre-trial detention. This case is part of Germany’s broader efforts under universal jurisdiction laws to prosecute war crimes related to the Syrian conflict.
