Gatineau moves Samuel de Champlain monument amid statue removals in other cities

A statue of Samuel de Champlain has been reinstalled in Gatineau, Quebec, nearly ten years after its removal for maintenance. The monument, which was previously located at the intersection of promenade du Portage and rue Laval, has been relocated to the parc de la Francophonie. The decision to move the statue was based on several factors, including its proximity to the Ottawa River, historically significant to Champlain, and the suitability of the ground for the statue’s weight. Although the statue is currently missing its sword, plans for restoration are set for August. However, Chief Jean-Guy Whiteduck of the Kitigan Zibi Anishinābeg First Nation expressed concerns about the lack of consultation with Indigenous communities regarding the monument’s significance and historical context. The reinstatement occurs amidst broader discussions about the legacy of Champlain and the appropriateness of his statues in Canada, highlighted by the recent removal of a similar statue in Orillia, Ontario.

Why It Matters

The reinstallation of the Samuel de Champlain statue in Gatineau reflects ongoing debates in Canada regarding the commemoration of historical figures associated with colonialism. Champlain, known as the “Father of New France,” played a crucial role in the founding of Quebec City and established relationships with various Indigenous groups. As Canadian cities reassess their public monuments, the discussions surrounding Champlain’s legacy highlight the need for inclusive historical narratives that recognize the contributions and perspectives of Indigenous peoples. This context is vital as communities grapple with the implications of colonial history and seek paths toward reconciliation.
