Auckland Anytime Fitness franchise closes gym owing $240,000 to Inland Revenue

An Auckland-based franchise of Anytime Fitness has entered liquidation, with debts exceeding $240,000 owed to the Inland Revenue. The gym, located on Constellation Drive, ceased operations last week after Brad Wondergem, the sole director and shareholder, initiated the liquidation process on March 9. Prior to this, Inland Revenue had filed a High Court application for the company’s liquidation on February 3. The first report from liquidators Derek Ah Sam and Paul Vlasic indicates that the company owes $122,545 in preferential claims for GST and PAYE arrears, along with an additional $126,360 in unsecured claims for penalties and interest.

Why It Matters

The liquidation of the Anytime Fitness franchise highlights ongoing financial challenges within the fitness industry, which has faced significant strain during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Many gyms experienced reduced memberships and revenue losses, leading to increased insolvencies. The case underscores the financial obligations gym owners have toward tax authorities, especially concerning employee-related taxes. The situation also reflects broader economic trends affecting small businesses, including rising operational costs and competition within the fitness sector.
