India plans to demolish university founded by Muslim leader

More than 100 students and residents are staging an indefinite sit-in at Mohammad Ali Jauhar University in Rampur, India, to protest the planned demolition of 38 out of its 40 buildings. The Rampur district administration claims the structures violate regulatory guidelines and has ordered their removal by August 5. The university’s vice chancellor stated that a recent stay on the demolition order does not prevent it from occurring. The university’s founder, Azam Khan, a prominent Muslim politician, faces numerous legal challenges from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.
