Fruit fly discovery puts part of Alameda County into quarantine

The discovery of a single mated female Mediterranean fruit fly has led to a 71 square mile quarantine in southern Alameda County, aimed at eradicating the invasive pest. The California Department of Food and Agriculture’s Plant Health and Pest Prevention Services Division is overseeing the efforts, with residents and fruit growers within the designated area required to adhere to quarantine regulations. The affected region is bordered by Highway 84 to the north, with a focus on controlling the spread of the Mediterranean fruit fly.
