From Fighters to Policemen in a Post-Assad Damascus

Former fighters for Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (H.T.S.), who overthrew Bashar al-Assad’s government in Damascus, have now transitioned to become policemen, focusing on restoring security and order in the capital. Led by former rebel Basel al-Helal, the fighters turned police are now manning checkpoints, controlling traffic, returning looted property, and conducting raids to apprehend criminals. Concerns about H.T.S.’s governance arise due to past rights abuses, but the fighters assure that their mission is to maintain law and order in the post-Assad era.
