An elderly French woman, Marie-Thérèse Helene Ross, was arrested by Immigration Enforcement in Alabama shortly after the death of her husband, a U.S. veteran. Her family reports that she was handcuffed and placed in an overcrowded detention center. The Department of Homeland Security has labeled her an “illegal alien,” stating she overstayed her Visa Waiver Program entry, which allowed her to remain in the U.S. for 90 days. Ross moved to the U.S. in 2025 to reconnect with her husband, who passed away in January, leaving her waiting for a decision on her green card application. Her family is advocating for her release on humanitarian grounds, expressing serious concerns for her health as she suffers from heart and back issues.
Why It Matters
This case highlights the contentious nature of U.S. immigration enforcement, especially concerning individuals who have familial ties to American citizens. The Department of Homeland Security has intensified its actions against undocumented immigrants, including those married to U.S. citizens, as evidenced by other recent arrests. The treatment of detainees, particularly vulnerable populations like the elderly, raises ethical questions about immigration policy and enforcement practices. The ongoing debates over immigration reform and humanitarian considerations underscore the complexities within the U.S. immigration system.
