Free State education department responds to closure of derelict school by parents

The community-driven civic movement, Gatvol Voice for Change, conducted an oversight inspection at Western Holdings Primary School in Welkom to address ongoing safety and infrastructure concerns. The school was closed by parents and community members on June 1 due to issues including leaking mobile classrooms, unsafe debris, stagnant water, and inadequate fencing. The Free State Department of Education has since committed to repairing the leaking roofs by June 19, completing barricading by June 15, and appointing a contractor for permanent infrastructure by late July or early August. Despite these commitments, community member Tumelo Moqeke expressed skepticism, citing a history of unfulfilled promises and emphasizing the urgent need for immediate repairs to ensure the safety of students.

Why It Matters

This situation highlights the ongoing challenges in South African education infrastructure, particularly in rural areas where schools often face neglect. The closure of Western Holdings Primary School reflects broader systemic issues regarding school safety and the effectiveness of government responses to community concerns. Delays in infrastructure projects and inadequate learning conditions can significantly impact students’ educational experiences, underscoring the necessity for timely government action to address infrastructure deficiencies in schools. Improved communication and accountability between educational authorities and local communities are essential for rebuilding trust and ensuring safe learning environments for all students.
