France is deliberating its response after Algeria ordered the expulsion of 12 embassy staff following the arrest of an Algerian consulate official linked to the kidnapping of TikTok influencer Amir Boukhors, a critic of the Algerian government. Tensions have escalated between the two nations, with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot warning of immediate retaliation if the expulsions proceed, as Algeria claims the official’s arrest was unjust. Relations have been strained since France’s support of a Moroccan autonomy plan, prompting both sides to exchange diplomatic grievances and threats.
