A 30-year-old woman, Kit Birks, has successfully completed an 11-month solo trek across Europe, walking nearly 5,000 miles to raise awareness for suicide prevention. Birks embarked on her journey, named “Stride Beyond Silence,” on July 7, 2025, and traveled through 13 countries, starting from Nordkapp in Norway and ending at Gavdos, Greece. She carried a 23kg backpack and often camped off-grid for up to 10 days at a time. Throughout her expedition, she faced various challenges, including a near-miss cliff fall in Sweden. Driven by personal experiences with mental health issues, Birks aims to foster open discussions around mental illness and hopes to raise over £100,000 for two charities, the Campaign Against Living Miserably and James’ Place.

Why It Matters

Birks’ journey highlights the importance of mental health awareness, particularly regarding suicide prevention. The World Health Organization reports that approximately 703,000 people die by suicide each year, making it a significant global health concern. Initiatives like Birks’ not only raise funds but also encourage conversations that can lead to better understanding and support for those struggling with mental health issues. Her effort resonates with many, as personal stories of struggle and survival play a crucial role in reducing stigma associated with mental illness.
