After initially voting to finance repairs to the Tampa Bay Rays’ stadium, the St. Petersburg City Council reversed course and the Rays will now pay the New York Yankees $15 million to play their home games at the Yankees’ spring training ballpark due to damage caused by Hurricane Milton. The repairs to Tropicana Field, estimated at $55.7 million, cannot be completed before the 2026 season, putting the future of the stadium and a proposed new $1.3 billion ballpark in jeopardy. The Rays have already spent $50 million on the new stadium project, but delays in bond approvals have halted progress, leading to uncertainty about the team’s long-term future in the Tampa Bay area.
