Flock Faces Accusations of Reactivating Cameras Without Town Notification

Officials in Littleton, Massachusetts, have raised concerns that Flock Safety reactivated five surveillance cameras without notifying the town. The cameras, which the town had temporarily disabled earlier this year, were found to be still operational. In response, town officials have instructed the Town Counsel to terminate the contract with Flock Safety and to work with the Department of Public Works to remove the six cameras situated on public streets. This incident follows a significant cybersecurity breach in Littleton last year, attributed to a Chinese state-sponsored hacking group, which lasted over 300 days. Additionally, Flock Safety is exploring the use of dashcams in rideshare vehicles to monitor license plates, effectively transforming drivers into mobile surveillance units.

Why It Matters

This situation highlights ongoing tensions between privacy concerns and surveillance technology in local governance. The incident in Littleton underscores the potential risks of unauthorized surveillance and raises questions about transparency and control over public safety measures. The town’s previous experience with a prolonged cybersecurity breach further complicates the narrative, demonstrating vulnerabilities in data security that can be exploited. As cities increasingly turn to surveillance systems to enhance safety, the ethical implications and operational integrity of these technologies remain critical issues for community trust and governance.
