How Will Taliban Address Armed Opposition Five Years After Takeover?

What You Need to Know
• Saturday marks five years since the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan in August 2021.
• Various armed groups have emerged, claiming responsibility for attacks on government forces across several provinces.
• The United Nations reports that these groups remain active but do not control any significant territory.

On Saturday, August 19, 2023, it will be five years since the Taliban, led by Zabihullah Mujahid, regained control of Afghanistan. Following the fall of the previous government in August 2021, numerous armed groups have surfaced, each claiming responsibility for attacks on government forces in various provinces. Their online presence has notably increased in recent months. A significant question arises regarding whether the proliferation of these groups indicates a true expansion of armed opposition or reflects fragmentation among their leaders. Renewed fighting has been reported in Badakhshan province, where the Afghanistan Freedom Front engaged Taliban forces. The United Nations indicates that while these armed groups are active, they have not posed a substantial challenge to Taliban control and lack territorial dominance.

Why It Matters

The emergence of various armed groups in Afghanistan highlights the ongoing instability since the Taliban’s return to power. The National Resistance Front was the first major armed group to form after the Taliban’s takeover, as former military personnel sought to resist the regime. However, their efforts have largely been ineffective due to the groups’ formation outside Afghanistan, limiting their local influence and support. Additionally, the Afghan populace’s exhaustion from decades of conflict has diminished the potential for widespread support for armed resistance against the Taliban.
