Five police officers have been placed on leave after a bag containing firearms was discovered outside the residence of London Mayor Sadiq Khan. The bag included an MP5 semi-automatic carbine, a Glock pistol, a Taser, and several rounds of ammunition, reportedly left by armed officers responsible for Khan’s security. The incident was brought to light by a member of the public, Jordan Griffiths, who found the bag and alerted the police, who arrived shortly thereafter to recover the items. The Metropolitan Police confirmed that an internal review is underway to understand the circumstances surrounding the incident, which occurred around 9:40 PM. A spokesperson for Mayor Khan emphasized the seriousness of the situation and highlighted that it has been referred to the Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards for further examination.

Why It Matters

This incident underscores the need for stringent security protocols for public officials, especially in urban environments where safety is paramount. The presence of firearms in public spaces can lead to significant concerns about public safety and police accountability. Historical instances of security oversights involving high-profile figures have often resulted in public outcry and demands for reform within law enforcement agencies. The Metropolitan Police’s rapid response and subsequent review signal an acknowledgment of the potential risks associated with such lapses, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the trust of the community they serve.
