First Syria flight takes off from Damascus airport since Assad’s downfall

The first commercial flight in Syria since the ousting of President Bashar al-Assad took off from Damascus airport, landing in Aleppo with 43 passengers, including journalists. Pro-Assad forces abandoned the airport in December, leading to a pause in flights, but international flights are set to resume on December 24 after maintenance work. The new ruling coalition, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, is working towards stabilizing Syria’s economy and transitioning to a new government, with a focus on free and fair elections and integrating Kurdish-held areas.
