Gas leak ignites Viva fuel plant in Geelong, Victoria, which produces 10% of Australia’s fuel. The fire broke out at the 120,000 barrels-per-day refinery run by Viva Energy, with flames as high as 60m after a gas leak ignited. Australia, heavily reliant on imports for 80% of its fuel, faces fuel security challenges due to the Iran war disrupting global supply chains. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese secured an additional supply of 100 million litres of diesel from Brunei and South Korea to address the crisis.

Why It Matters

The fire at the Viva fuel plant in Geelong, which produces a significant portion of Australia’s fuel, comes at a critical time as the country struggles to secure its fuel supply amidst global disruptions. With Australia heavily dependent on imports for its fuel needs, the incident highlights the vulnerability of the nation’s energy security. The government’s efforts to secure additional fuel supplies and manage the impact of the fire on production underscore the importance of addressing fuel security challenges to ensure stability in times of crisis.
