A fire at an unregistered nursing home in western Sri Lanka has resulted in the deaths of 12 residents and injured eight others. The blaze broke out late Wednesday in Anguruwatota, where 51 residents were rescued by emergency services. The nursing home housed individuals with mental illnesses and was reportedly overcrowded, accommodating 71 residents despite having beds for only 15. The facility’s director has been arrested on suspicion of causing deaths through negligence. Local authorities had previously warned the home to adhere to legal regulations, as it was not officially registered.

Why It Matters

This tragedy highlights ongoing issues regarding the regulation and safety of care facilities in Sri Lanka. Unregistered nursing homes can operate outside of established safety standards, increasing risks for vulnerable populations. The overcrowding in this particular facility underscores systemic failures in providing adequate care and oversight for individuals with mental health needs. Previous governmental efforts to enforce compliance with regulations have proven insufficient, raising concerns about the safety and well-being of residents in similar institutions across the country.
