Every year, millions of women and girls worldwide are subjected to the dangerous procedure of “female circumcision,” involving the removal of part or all of the external genitalia for non-medical reasons, leading to serious health consequences. This practice also exists in the North Caucasian republics of Russia, where authorities do not punish those performing it, despite efforts by some to combat it. The Russian Ministry of Health condemns the procedure, but challenges remain in addressing this form of violence and discrimination against women and girls.
