Sonali Menezes, a Hamilton artist and zine creator, has been addressing tenant issues through art after experiencing significant maintenance problems at her apartment complex, Lamoreaux Gardens. After moving in December 2022, Menezes and her husband faced immediate pest problems, including cockroaches, as well as ongoing issues like leaky taps and mould. A year later, when they learned of a proposed above-guideline rent increase from their landlord, Menezes initiated a tenant action campaign using zines as a method for organizing and documenting grievances. The resulting zine, “Welcome to Lamoreaux Gardens,” compiled residents’ concerns and was distributed to both the landlord and the community to raise awareness of the living conditions. The initiative garnered support from local tenants, leading to the formation of a tenant association aimed at advocating for improved living standards within the complex.
Why It Matters
This story highlights the challenges faced by renters in maintaining safe and habitable living conditions, particularly in large rental complexes. Zines have historically served as powerful tools for grassroots activism, allowing marginalized voices to document and address systemic issues. The rise in above-guideline rent increases reflects broader trends in housing affordability crises, particularly in urban areas, where tenants often struggle to advocate for their rights against larger property management companies. By organizing collectively, tenants can amplify their voices and influence change in their living environments.
