FDA Moves to Remove Ingestible Fluoride for Children
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced plans to review and potentially remove ingestible fluoride prescription products for children from the market due to concerns over health risks, including alterations to the gut microbiome and associations with thyroid disorders and decreased IQ. While fluoride is recognized for its role in dental health by strengthening enamel and reducing cavities, some, including HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., argue it poses safety risks, a view not widely supported by dental experts. The FDA’s decision follows Kennedy’s call for an end to community water fluoridation after Utah’s ban on the mineral in water systems.
