A woman has been arrested at Gran Canaria Airport for attempting to leave without paying a £2,000 hotel bill. The Irish national was on holiday with her partner and child at a resort in San Bartolomé de Tirajana, where she stayed for eleven nights on an all-inclusive basis. Hotel management reported her when they could not contact her after her departure. Despite making a reservation using a bank card, the payment was declined when the hotel tried to charge her after her stay. After multiple failed attempts to resolve the situation, police located her at Border Control, leading to her detention and subsequent court appearance.

Why It Matters

This incident underscores the importance of financial accountability in the tourism sector, particularly in popular destinations like the Canary Islands, where tourism is a key economic driver. Hotels in these areas often face challenges related to unpaid bills, which can impact their operations and the local economy. The National Police’s proactive measures in combating such criminal activities highlight their commitment to protecting the integrity of the tourism industry, ensuring that establishments can operate without the threat of fraud or financial loss.
