Families Displaced by Famine in Sudan

Omdurman, Sudan – Marasi Alfadil and her children arrived in Omdurman to find little waiting for them, settling in a half-finished building with no proper walls, services, or adequate food. She fled el-Fasher in North Darfur amid a siege by the RSF paramilitary group, which led to a UN-identified genocide. Thousands remain in el-Fasher facing food shortages and violence. The Global Report on Food Crises highlighted famine risks in other regions like Kadugli and 20 other areas in Darfur and Kordofan.

Why It Matters

Sieges by the RSF in Darfur and Kordofan have led to severe food shortages and famine conditions, with hundreds of thousands facing extreme hunger. Displacement has stripped millions of livelihoods, leaving them reliant on inconsistent aid. Sudan is home to the world’s largest internal displacement crisis, with nearly 25 million people, including 4.2 million children, facing food shortages. Continued violence and funding shortages hinder access to regions in need, making survival a daily struggle for families like Marasi’s and Taqwa’s.
