Facebook and Instagram experienced a significant outage for the second time since Sunday, with issues beginning around 12:45 PM. Over 5,000 users reported difficulties accessing the platforms, with approximately 4,400 affected on Facebook and nearly 600 on Instagram as of 1 PM. Most of the disruptions were reported on mobile apps, according to monitoring service Downdetector. Complaints from users highlighted messages indicating technical difficulties, such as “Sorry, something went wrong. We’re working on it and we’ll get it fixed as soon as we can.” Users in the US and Spain were among those reporting issues, while Meta, the parent company of both platforms, stated there were no known problems listed on its status page.

Why It Matters

Outages of major social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram can have widespread implications, affecting communication for millions of users globally. Such disruptions highlight the reliance on these platforms for personal and commercial interactions, with previous outages prompting discussions about data privacy and service reliability. Meta’s ownership of multiple platforms, including WhatsApp, means that technical failures can extend beyond just one service, compounding frustrations for users across their entire ecosystem. Historical data shows that social media outages can lead to increased scrutiny of platform management and infrastructure resilience, especially as these services become integral to daily life and business operations.
