Scientists in 14 studies found “alarming” levels of microplastic in major rivers across Europe, with an average of three microplastics per cubic meter of water observed. Despite not reaching the levels of the world’s most polluted rivers, the invisible microplastics pose a significant threat to aquatic life. The research calls for a reduction in plastic production to address the widespread pollution issue.
