An election observation mission from the European Union has dismissed allegations of misconduct in Colombia’s recent presidential election, stating the process was “transparent, orderly, and smooth.” Esteban Gonzalez Pons, head of the mission, noted the election as a democratic success despite concerns over illegal armed groups and political polarization. Far-right candidate Abelardo de la Espriella emerged as the frontrunner with 43.7% of the vote, while leftist Ivan Cepeda garnered 40.9%. Outgoing President Gustavo Petro has raised questions about the vote count, alleging irregularities, but the EU found no evidence of fraud.
