Just 10% of Europeans view the U.S. as an ally, new poll shows

Just 11% of Europeans now view the United States as an ally, according to a recent poll by the European Council on Foreign Relations involving nearly 20,000 respondents across 15 countries. This figure marks a decline from 16% six months ago and 22% in November 2024, reflecting what the think tank described as a “collapse in European faith in the U.S.” Half of those surveyed consider the U.S. a “necessary partner,” while 25% regard it as a rival or adversary, a sentiment that has increased in countries like Denmark, France, Spain, and Switzerland. Concerns over U.S. actions, particularly under President Trump, such as threats to withdraw from NATO and unilateral military decisions, contribute to this shift in perception. Most respondents expressed a lack of confidence that the U.S. would support them in the event of an attack and suggested their governments should invest in European defense capabilities instead.

Why It Matters

This decline in trust towards the U.S. among Europeans could have significant implications for transatlantic relations and defense strategies. Historical ties between Europe and the U.S. have been shaped by shared democratic values and security alliances, particularly through NATO. However, the changing sentiment may push European nations to seek greater military independence and foster closer defense cooperation within Europe. The poll highlights a growing desire among European countries to reduce reliance on U.S. support, reflecting shifting geopolitical attitudes in a landscape increasingly defined by national interests and evolving global dynamics.
