Europeans Resist Air Conditioning Amid Deadly Heat Waves

France experienced record heat last week, leading to approximately 1,000 deaths, mostly among elderly individuals. Europe, with its aging population and rapidly warming climate, faces a significant heat danger. The continent has the highest rate of heat-related deaths per capita globally, despite having fewer hot days. Since June 21, Europe has seen over 1,300 heat-related excess deaths, according to the World Health Organization.

European officials are calling for change in response to the heat crisis, but they are not advocating for air conditioning as a solution. While air conditioning can reduce heat-related deaths by 75%, only about 20% of Europeans have it in their homes, compared to 90% in the U.S. Urban adaptation expert Ine Vandecasteele believes that installing more air conditioning will only exacerbate warming by emitting more heat into the environment and is not a sustainable solution.

Instead of relying on air conditioning, European governments are investing in other cooling methods for historic and densely populated cities, such as public cooling stations. In Rome, wearable technology is being distributed to monitor the elderly population, who are most vulnerable to heat-related illnesses. Italy has embraced air conditioning more than other European countries, with 56% of homes having it as of 2024.

Despite the availability of air conditioning, a survey in France revealed that one in six people would rather endure the heat for the sake of the environment. Vandecasteele emphasizes that addressing the heat crisis is not just for personal comfort but for the long-term sustainability of the planet. “We are doing this for the future generations.”
