Northern Ireland will not be classified as a host nation for the Euro 2028 finals, missing out on a back-door route to qualify, as confirmed by Football Association of Ireland’s chief executive David Courell. The qualification procedure for the tournament, to be held in the UK and Ireland, is yet to be formally outlined by Uefa, but it is expected that all co-hosts will compete in the group stages with reserve spots for non-qualifying nations. Northern Ireland will not be part of any potential play-off involving the hosts, following the removal of Casement Park as a host stadium, and will have to qualify through the regular process.
