EU and Russian aircraft assist Serbia with wildfires

EU crews, including teams from Romania and the Czech Republic, are assisting Serbian firefighters in battling major wildfires in the Deliblatska Pescara nature reserve and the Stolovi mountain range, with a Russian Ilyushin Il-76 aircraft aiding efforts. Serbia requested support through the EU’s Civil Protection Mechanism after realizing local resources were insufficient. The ongoing wildfires, exacerbated by extreme heat and drought, have also impacted neighboring North Macedonia and prompted cross-border assistance from Croatian firefighters.
