EU kicks off landmark AI law enforcement as first batch of restrictions enter into force

The European Union has begun the enforcement of its groundbreaking artificial intelligence law, the EU AI Act, which came into force in August 2024. The legislation includes prohibitions on certain AI systems deemed risky, such as social scoring and real-time facial recognition, with fines of up to 35 million euros or 7% of global annual revenue for non-compliance. Companies must now adhere to the regulations to avoid penalties, surpassing those possible under the GDPR digital privacy law.
