A woman in Heidelberg, Mississippi, shot and killed one of the monkeys that escaped after a truck carrying them overturned, citing concerns for her children’s safety. Jessica Bond Ferguson acted upon her son’s sighting of the monkey in their yard, fearing the potential diseases the animals could carry. The Rhesus monkeys were being transported from a biomedical research center, with most of the 21 monkeys reportedly killed in the accident. The Mississippi Highway Patrol is investigating the crash, while officials confirmed the remaining monkeys were pathogen-free but still aggressive.
