The PepsiCo bottling plant in Chicago’s Back of the Yards neighborhood abruptly closed, shocking long-term employees like Juan Gonzalez and Abdullah Kumasi. Teamsters Local 727 representatives were also surprised by the sudden shutdown, which occurred shortly after finalizing a new contract. PepsiCo stated the decision was due to physical limitations of the building, offering two months of full pay and benefits to employees while some, like 29-year employee Daryl Smith, are advocating for early retirement options and reassignment for longer-term workers.
