Lawmakers are calling for an investigation into the death of Emmanuel Damas, a 56-year-old Haitian man who died in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody. Damas, who had been seeking asylum in Massachusetts, was hospitalized for pneumonia after experiencing a severe toothache. Massachusetts Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey, along with Rep. Ayanna Pressley, criticized ICE for allegedly failing to provide timely medical care, claiming his death was “highly preventable.” Damas is one of at least ten people to die in ICE custody this year.
