Emergency Fair Work Commission Hearing on Rising Fuel Costs for Trucking

Owner-drivers, small trucking businesses, and transport employees are set to address the Fair Work Commission, warning that they are “weeks away” from financial collapse due to soaring fuel prices. The hearing will commence at 10 am on Wednesday in Sydney, following the Federal Government’s passage of the Fairer Fuel bill, which fast-tracks emergency applications in the road transport sector. Representatives from the Transport Workers’ Union (TWU), Australian Road Transport Industrial Organisation (ARTIO), and the National Road Freighters Association will discuss the unprecedented financial strain impacting their operations. TWU National Secretary Michael Kaine emphasized that long-time industry drivers have never faced such challenges and highlighted the need for major transport clients, including retailers and manufacturers, to conduct weekly fuel reviews. The group warns that fuel costs could exceed normal levels significantly by April 21, leading to widespread business closures.

Why It Matters

The transport sector is experiencing a crisis, with transport company liquidations increasing by 48% compared to last year. Additionally, 45 fatalities from truck crashes have been reported this year, including 14 drivers. The significant rise in fuel prices is not only threatening the livelihoods of owner-drivers and small businesses but also jeopardizing national supply chains. Immediate intervention is necessary to address these fuel costs to prevent further economic disruption and loss of life in the sector, underscoring the urgency of the situation for the industry and the broader economy.
