British Museum and Greek PM ‘held talks over return of Elgin Marbles’

The Greek prime minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, has reportedly met with British Museum officials to discuss the return of the Elgin Marbles ahead of his visit to the UK. He is expected to meet with Sir Keir Starmer on Tuesday to discuss the ancient sculptures, with the British Museum trustees reportedly holding private meetings with Mitsotakis and his foreign minister earlier this year. Former prime minister Rishi Sunak’s previous push for the return of the Elgin Marbles led to a spat with Mitsotakis, prompting Sunak to cancel a planned meeting.
