Electricity gradually returns to Cuba after millions left in the dark

Electricity service in Cuba was restored after a 36-hour blackout caused by a substation failure, with most of Havana and eastern parts of the country regaining power. The outage, the fourth in six months, was attributed to a substation failure in Havana and affected phone, internet, and water services. The crisis is a result of fuel shortages at power plants, aging infrastructure, and a severe economic downturn exacerbated by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and tightening US sanctions.
