What You Need to Know
• Midwest Poultry Services is recalling 1.6 million eggs due to potential salmonella contamination.
• The affected eggs were produced in Texas and distributed to retailers in six states from June 6 to July 3.
• Consumers are advised to return the recalled eggs for a full refund, with no reported illnesses linked to them.

Midwest Poultry Services is recalling 1.6 million eggs over potential salmonella contamination, as announced by the Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday. The recall involves white-shell and cage-free shell eggs produced at the company’s Texas farms, which were distributed to retailers in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas between June 6 and July 3. The eggs have sell-by or best-by dates ranging from July 20 to August 17 and were sold under various brand names, including Kroger and Simple Truth. Although no illnesses have been reported, consumers are urged to return the recalled eggs to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Why It Matters

This recall highlights the ongoing concerns regarding food safety and the potential health risks associated with salmonella contamination. Salmonella Enteritidis can lead to severe infections, particularly in vulnerable populations such as young children and the elderly. The proactive measures taken by Midwest Poultry Services, including environmental monitoring and root cause analysis, demonstrate the importance of safety protocols in the poultry industry. The FDA’s involvement underscores the regulatory oversight aimed at protecting public health in the food supply chain.
