Professor analyzes Mars rover data, achieving significant breakthrough

A researcher at Edith Cowan University has provided new evidence suggesting that significant portions of Mars were once covered by water. Professor Paulo de Souza, who participated in NASA’s Mars Exploration Rover mission, discovered previously undetected mineral traces in data collected by the Spirit rover, which operated from 2004 to 2010. His analysis revealed the presence of hematite and altered magnetite—iron-rich minerals typically formed in the presence of water—at undisturbed soil sites in Gusev Crater. This finding contradicts earlier beliefs that these minerals were absent or present in undetectable amounts. By synthesizing hundreds of measurements, Professor de Souza created a comprehensive profile of Martian soil, indicating that the widespread occurrence of crystalline hematite points to a wetter past on Mars. His findings were published in the journal detailing advancements in analyzing existing data.
