What You Need to Know
• The Democratic Republic of Congo’s latest Ebola outbreak has resulted in at least 930 deaths.
• Confirmed cases of Ebola in the DRC have reached at least 2,344, with 37 new deaths reported in 24 hours.
• The World Health Organization states this outbreak is the third-largest on record, spreading faster than previous outbreaks.

The Democratic Republic of Congo’s Minister of Health announced that the death toll from the ongoing Ebola outbreak has reached at least 930 as of July 20, 2026. The total number of confirmed cases has risen to at least 2,344, with a significant increase of 37 deaths recorded in just 24 hours over the weekend. The World Health Organization, led by Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, indicated that this outbreak is spreading at an unprecedented rate, having reached 2,000 confirmed cases in just two months, compared to over ten months for the previous outbreak from 2018 to 2020. The outbreak, which began in Ituri province, has now spread to five provinces in the DRC and has also affected neighboring Uganda, although Uganda is nearing a virus-free status.

Why It Matters

This outbreak is significant as it marks the third-largest Ebola outbreak on record, highlighting the ongoing challenges in managing the virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The rapid increase in cases and deaths indicates that transmission chains are not being effectively controlled, with over 80 percent of new cases identified outside known contact lists. Historical data shows that previous outbreaks took much longer to reach similar case numbers, raising concerns about the effectiveness of current containment measures. Additionally, healthcare worker strikes in Ituri have further complicated response efforts, as they demand compensation for their services during this crisis.
