Heavy rains have caused severe flooding in the Eastern Cape’s Sarah Baartman District and Nelson Mandela Bay, leading to the evacuation of residents from informal settlements. The Kouga municipality has provided blankets, mattresses, and meals in community halls for those affected. Multiple roads and bridges, including the R331 in Patensie and the R330 route, are closed due to flooding, rockfalls, and sinkholes, posing significant dangers to motorists. Authorities have warned against attempting to cross flooded areas, emphasizing the importance of safety as conditions continue to be monitored. Power outages have also been reported in Nelson Mandela Bay, and schools in several districts have been closed due to the severe weather.

Why It Matters

The Eastern Cape has a history of weather-related disasters, with severe rainfall often leading to flooding and infrastructure damage. The region’s vulnerability is exacerbated by aging infrastructure and limited drainage systems. According to meteorological data, rainfall amounts in some areas have reached up to 200 mm, further highlighting the challenges faced during extreme weather events. This situation underscores the importance of preparedness and effective emergency response to mitigate the impacts of such natural disasters on communities.
