Eagles sign Andy Dalton as backup quarterback for Jalen Hurts

The Philadelphia Eagles have completed a trade to bolster their quarterback depth, acquiring veteran Andy Dalton from the Carolina Panthers in exchange for a seventh-round draft pick. Dalton, 38, has spent the last three years primarily as a backup, most recently to Bryce Young, the first overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. He briefly served as the Panthers’ starter in 2024, finishing with a 1-4 record over five games. Dalton began his career with the Cincinnati Bengals, where he led the team to four consecutive playoff appearances from 2011 to 2014 but did not secure a postseason win. The Eagles are looking to provide competition for Tanner McKee, Hurts’ backup during the previous season, as they prepare for the 2026 season.

Why It Matters

This trade is significant as it reflects the Eagles’ strategy to ensure a reliable backup for Jalen Hurts, especially after a challenging previous season that ended in a wild-card playoff loss. The addition of Dalton, who has extensive experience as a starter, provides a safety net for the Eagles’ quarterback situation, particularly given Hurts’ health concerns. Historically, the Eagles have faced quarterback challenges, making depth crucial for their success. Dalton’s longtime presence in the league, including his tenure with the Bengals and recent years with the Panthers, brings a wealth of experience that could prove vital for the team’s aspirations in the upcoming season.
