EAC ministers discuss urgent response to Ebola outbreak

East African Community (EAC) health ministers convened a virtual extraordinary meeting to address the Ebola outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo strain, which has affected the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda. The meeting, taking place from June 1 to June 2, aims to develop regional strategies to curb the spread of the virus. EAC Secretary-General Stephen Mbundi emphasized the importance of mobilizing resources for enhanced surveillance, laboratory diagnosis, and rapid response efforts. As of May 31, there were 282 confirmed cases and 42 deaths in the DRC, while Uganda reported seven cases, one resulting in death. The EAC is activating a mobile laboratory network to facilitate rapid testing at key border points and is collaborating with the Africa CDC, WHO, and other partners to strengthen regional preparedness.

Why It Matters

The current Ebola outbreak, declared on May 15, 2026, is significant due to the Bundibugyo strain’s rarity and the absence of a licensed vaccine or specific treatment. This outbreak has primarily affected the DRC’s Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu provinces, with high population mobility raising concerns about cross-border transmission. The EAC’s proactive measures, including the deployment of mobile laboratories and enhanced diagnostic capacities, are critical in addressing the public health threat posed by Ebola and ensuring regional stability. Historical precedents of Ebola outbreaks illustrate the need for swift and coordinated responses to prevent widespread transmission and mitigate health crises in East Africa.
