Former Silver Ferns captain Ana Noovao has passed away at the age of 58. She made her debut for the New Zealand national netball team in 1989 and took on the captaincy in 1992 following Waimarama Taumaunu’s retirement. Notably, Noovao served as vice-captain during a historic demonstration match against Australia at the 1990 Commonwealth Games, which helped solidify netball’s place at the Games. She was also part of the Silver Ferns team that narrowly lost to Australia by one goal in the 1991 Netball World Cup final. In addition to her playing career, Noovao contributed to the sport as a coach for the Cook Islands national team.

Why It Matters

Ana Noovao’s legacy in New Zealand netball is significant, as she played a crucial role in the sport’s development and international recognition. Her leadership and performance helped elevate New Zealand’s status in netball, particularly through pivotal events like the Commonwealth Games and the Netball World Cup. The Silver Ferns have consistently been a dominant force in international netball, and Noovao’s contributions as a player and leader have had a lasting impact on the team and the sport as a whole. Her passing marks a notable loss for the New Zealand sports community and highlights the importance of acknowledging the contributions of former athletes in shaping future generations.
