A firefighter, Joshua Strauss, was cleared of wrongdoing after pooling meal allowances for colleagues while on shift, despite Fire and Emergency New Zealand accusing him of misusing the funds. The Employment Relations Authority found that the organization unlawfully accessed Strauss’ bank account information, which led to disciplinary action, violating the Privacy Act. New Zealand Professional Firefighters’ Union president Joe Stanley stated that the union had urged Fire and Emergency to reconsider its approach, but the organization refused to do so.
