Dress Made from Living Mycelium Can Self-Renew and Repair

Researchers in China have created a groundbreaking living mycelium textile capable of self-cleaning, surface renewal, and partial hole repair when treated with a nutrient solution and fresh fungus. Developed by the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology, this engineered living material (ELM) utilizes dormant cordyceps militaris fungus to maintain biological activity even after fabrication. The mycelium base allows for environmental responsiveness and adaptability, with additional properties like pigmentation and UV resistance achieved by co-culturing with other fungi or yeast. A prototype dress showcasing these features has been created in collaboration with material innovation company Peelshere. While the textile demonstrates promising self-renewing and semi-repairing capabilities, further enhancements in durability and moisture resistance are needed before it can be widely used in clothing or architecture.

Why It Matters

The development of living textiles represents a significant advancement in sustainable materials and bioengineering, potentially revolutionizing the fashion and construction industries. Historically, textiles have relied on synthetic materials, which contribute to environmental degradation. The ability of living mycelium to self-repair and renew presents an opportunity to reduce waste and extend product lifespans. As industries increasingly prioritize sustainability, innovations like these may lead to more eco-friendly alternatives that align with circular economy principles, where materials are reused and repurposed rather than discarded.
