Over 100 North Koreans have disappeared after attempting to defect or contact relatives in South Korea, as reported by the Transitional Justice Working Group. The study, based on interviews with 62 escapees, identified 113 individuals in 66 cases of enforced disappearances, with 80% arrested in North Korea and the rest in China or Russia. The majority vanished after being detained by the Ministry of State Security, with reasons ranging from attempting to flee the country to being in contact with individuals from South Korea or other countries.
