New Year’s Day Weather: Rain in Central NZ, Clear in Auckland and Southland

Showers are set to continue across much of New Zealand on the first day of 2026, although fine weather is predicted for the northern and southern extremes of the country. MetService forecaster Alanah Burrows noted that the North Island will experience mostly cloudy conditions with occasional showers, while the afternoon may bring some clear breaks. A gentle northwesterly breeze will prevail, except in Wellington, where strong winds are expected.
