The Justice Department has filed a lawsuit against two Chinese companies, Cixi Miaojie Electrical Appliance Co. and Changsha Jiayi Tianzhuo Trading Co., seeking a mandatory recall of their immersion water heaters sold under the “Lakkzoom” brand. The lawsuit claims these heaters pose a serious fire hazard, potentially overheating and igniting within minutes when either partially or completely out of water. The complaint alleges that the devices lack essential safety features found in other similar products that automatically shut off to prevent overheating. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has received over 235 reports related to fire incidents involving these heaters, which have reportedly caused at least 137 fire-related events since September 2024. Customers have described experiences of the heaters melting, sparking, and igniting fires in bathtubs and garages.
