Disney has announced the launch of “Infinity Vision,” a new premium large format (PLF) theater experience set to debut ahead of the release of “Avengers: Doomsday” in December. This initiative aims to enhance the movie-going experience by offering sharper visuals and superior audio through laser projection and immersive sound technology. The certification program will begin in summer 2024 with a re-release of “Avengers: Endgame” and will include 75 theaters in the U.S. and 300 internationally. The move comes as Disney looks to differentiate itself in the competitive premium viewing market, particularly after losing IMAX screen availability to “Dune: Part Three” during the holiday season.
Why It Matters
The introduction of Infinity Vision reflects Disney’s strategy to compete in the lucrative premium cinema market, particularly as blockbuster films increasingly rely on enhanced viewing experiences to attract audiences. The move follows a broader trend in the film industry, where companies like IMAX have set a high standard for large-screen experiences. By certifying its own theaters for Infinity Vision, Disney aims to ensure that its films can be showcased in environments that meet high-quality standards, thereby potentially increasing ticket sales and audience engagement for its major releases. The success of this initiative could impact future investments in theater technology and the overall cinema landscape.
